Caring For Your Spoons
To care for your wooden spoons and spatulas:
1) Hand wash with your regular dish soap
- (it's fine to let your piece soak in water for a little bit to loosen foodstuff...but try not to leave it for too long!)
- air-drying is perfectly fine
- MOST IMPORTANT: keep out of the dishwasher! (We've had customers tell us they've been putting their spoons in the dishwasher for years as long as the heated dry cycle is off: we find it less-risky to just hand-wash, though.)
2) If they start to dry out, rub a dab of mineral oil on them
- depending on wood type and utensil use, you might do this a couple times a year, once every few years, or never!
- yes, you can use other oils (coconut, butcher block oils, etc). We personally prefer food-grade mineral oil because there's no scent or "flavor" left behind.
That's it!
NOTE: Most woods will "roughen" as soon as they get wet: this is the top layer of the wood grain rising up, and has no effect on the stability of the piece.
- We minimize this for you by pre-soaking each piece before its final sanding step.
- However, if your utensil has roughened and you don't like the feel, lightly hand-sand it again (~320 grit sandpaper is fine) and oil it once more. Your piece should then be good as new!
